So, interesting twist in my NNTP research. Google has ostensibly buried information on it, as it wants to present NTP (time server), or other totally unrelated stuff. Old references are 404’d because no one has cared about usenet in 20 years.

It occurs to me that while Mastodon is a nice ambient watercooler conversation medium, I'm still missing something, and I think that's something less timely, and slightly more structured. I think that missing thing is Usenet, but with my own server, and peering with others who are doing the same. I'll have to do some research.
